Daily Groove
When you come into a shift (except OVN) you should be doing a few things
- First, check the calendar and see if and what appointments, events, or obligations that he has for the day.
- Second, look at the calendar and see what household task needs to be completed for that day/shift.
- It is best to encourage him to do these before he heads out for the day but you can negotiate with him as long as he gets them done by the end of the shift.
- Remember that just because he has a scheduled activity, that does not exempt him from cleaning up after himself like any of us so.
- At some point he needs to do his breathing exercises.
- Again, like cleaning, probably a good ide to get it done before heading out if possible but it needs to be a decision he is a part of.
- Other than that, his day is his but we should be encouraging him to do some activity outside the usual walking and driving. (pool, bowling, hang out with another person we serve, etc.)
- When he takes his meds, check them off on the MAR in Therap.
- At the end of your shift, put aside 5-10 minutes to complete your case notes on Therap.
Some Basic Guidelines
- Try to avoid his grunts and poor sign language to communicate. Encourage him to use his phone. He needs to perfect this communication and he needs to get to where he is able to use it to communicate with people who are not familiar with his language.
- If he is upset, focus on the feelings, "Are you anxious?" "Are you upset?" "what is bothering you?" etc. It can help if he just knows that someone else knows what he is going through.
- No more that 2 "Chocolate Bars" per day. You can look at the previous shift case notes and see if he has had then that day.
